Description
The JSNS² (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at the J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) experiment aims to
search for sterile neutrinos with Δm² around 1 eV² and to directly test the LSND anomaly.
JSNS² uses a neutrino source from muon decay at rest and searches for the appearance
of electron antineutrinos through the inverse beta decay reaction.
At the J-PARC Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF), a 3 GeV proton beam
is incident on a mercury target to produce an intense neutrinos.
The electron antineutrinos are detected using a Gd-loaded liquid scintillator detector.
The JSNS² detector, located at a baseline of 24 m from the mercury target, has been
taking physics data since 2021. JSNS²-II extends the experiment by adding the second
detector at a baseline of 48 m. The longer baseline improves the sensitivity in the
low-Δm² region, while the two-detector configuration helps reducing systematic uncertainties
through the comparison between the near and far detectors.
The construction and filling of the far detector have been completed, and the detector
is currently in the commissioning phase.
This poster presents the current status of the JSNS² and JSNS²-II experiments
and their prospects for the sterile neutrino search.
